New England Patriots’ Danny Amendola Launches Going the Distance for Literacy Reading Challenge
To Support Children’s Literacy Development
BOSTON – New England Patriots’ wide receiver Danny Amendola visited Taylor Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon to promote children’s literacy development through his Catches for Kids Foundation initiatives.
As part of the “Big Cheese Reads” program, a sponsorship initiative of Boston Partners in Education, Amendola read a short passage from Let’s Go to the Videotape by Dan Gutman to the fifth-grade class of Taylor Elementary School. The read-aloud was followed by a discussion regarding the importance of reading, education and finding a work passion.
“Boston’s youth are never too young to meet with individuals like Danny, who have had success on and off the football field,” said Boston Partners in Education Executive Director Pamela Civins. “He is a role model for our young people and their families and is committed to ensuring they have access to a variety of supports, enhancing their educational opportunities through his Catches for Kids Foundation.”
Amendola also launched his Catches for Kids Foundation Going the Distance for Literacy Reading Challenge at a school-wide assembly where he encouraged the students of Taylor Elementary School to participate and concluded with a school-wide read-aloud of Pete the Cat and the New Guy by Kimberly and James Dean, as well as a question-and-answer session.
The Catches for Kids Going the Distance for Literacy Reading Challenge tasks students of local Boston Public Schools to each read a combined 100,000 minutes throughout the school year. Students will log their individual reading minutes online, and the school with the highest combined minutes will receive a party with Danny at the end of the school year.
Going the Distance for Literacy, part of the Scholastic “Read 100,000” national initiative, is designed to bring families, schools and communities together to support children’s literacy development. The program aims to help families foster the skills, attitudes and behaviors that support children’s literacy development; help schools engage families through fun, literacy-based events; better prepare children for reading and learning; and support schools with their family engagement goals.
“I really enjoyed launching the Going the Distance for Literacy Reading Challenge at Taylor Elementary School,” said Danny Amendola. “Now we shout out to all of the schools in Boston to accept the challenge. I can’t wait to reward the school with the most reading minutes at the end of the school year with a fantastic celebration.”
